La Feria de las Flores as it is known, takes place in early August every year and has done since 1957. First organized by the Gardening Club of Medellin, the festival was an exhibition of locally grown flowers. Today street parades including Antique cars, Mass horse rides, the Flower Carrying Parade and a beauty pageant take place around the city and the festival is the most important social event of the year.


Medellin has 2 free cable cars that take to you fantastic viewpoints of the city which can be amazing on a clear day. On top of this the small town of Guatape is an inland paradise consisting of a flooded mountainous area after a reservoir was built for a hydroelectric dam. This created a beautiful landscape full of hills and lakes and now the area is a major tourist attraction from Medellin, due to the stunning scenery. A natural rock called ‘La Piedra de Peñol’ offers the most spectacular views from the top with access coming in the way of a staircase built in to one side of the rock.

Manizales

Manizales is the capital of the Caldas province in Colombia and sits at an altitude of 2150 meters. The city is also the main centre for coffee production in the country and has no less than 7 Universities making it an important city for education within Colombia.

The main attraction near to the city is the Nevado del Ruiz national park which is home to the Volcano of the same name. At 5321 meters above sea level Nevado del Ruiz (or Mount Ruiz) is an active volcano that is accessible as a day trip from Manizales.

Museums also feature in the town with the Casa-Museo Luis Alberto Acuña (a local artist’s museum), Casa de Antionio Ricuarte (house of the local hero who fought in Simon Bolivar’s army) and the Religious art museum being the pick of the bunch.
