Set in the middle of the Aburra valley Medellin is surrounded by beautiful green mountains and sits at an altitude of 1495 meters. This affords the city a pleasant spring like temperature for most of the year.

The people of Medellin, known locally as Paisas or Antioqueños are some of the most friendly people holidays in Colombia. You will find that most will go out of their way to help you and will often have a smile on their faces when doing so. With this spirit the people of Medellin take pride in their city and everything about it as well as the same pride for themselves and the way they look.

The world famous painter and sculptor Fernando Botero was born in Medellin and many of his works can be seen around the cities parks and plazas. Botero is famous for his paintings and bronze statues which display very voluptuous figures.

The city is also famous for it’s festivals with the Medellin Flower Festival taking centre stage. La Feria de las Flores as it is known, takes place in early August every year and has done since 1957. First organized by the Gardening Club of Medellin, the festival was an exhibition of locally grown flowers. Today street parades including Antique cars, Mass horse rides, the Flower Carrying Parade and a beauty pageant take place around the city and the festival is the most important social event of the year.

Medellin has 2 free cable cars that take to you fantastic viewpoints of the city which can be amazing on a clear day. On top of this the small town of Guatape is an inland paradise consisting of a flooded mountainous area after a reservoir was built for a hydroelectric dam. This created a beautiful landscape full of hills and lakes and now the area is a major tourist attraction from Medellin, due to the stunning scenery. A natural rock called ‘La Piedra de Peñol’ offers the most spectacular views from the top with access coming in the way of a staircase built in to one side of the rock.

All in all Medellin has become a favorite destination for travelers within Vacations in Colombia, one which you also are sure to enjoy.
