This is a shorter tour lasting 12 days with the focus on the Andean highlands and the stunning coffee growing region. You will travel from the cosmopolitan capital Bogota, with its many world class museums including the gold museum and the Botero Gallery, both set in the historic ‘La Canderlaria’ region of the city.
Onwards to the nearby charming colonial town of Villa de Leyva which is a Colombian national monument due to its period architecture dated from 1572. It is also in this region that the armies of Simon Bolivar and Francisco Santander declared independence for Colombia in 1817 after the battle of Boyaca. After returning back to Bogota for 1 night we will then travel by airplane to Pereira in the heart of the coffee growing region known locally as the ‘Cafetera’.
Delve in to this tasty Colombian tradition of growing the best and richest coffee in the world. Yes it really is that good! We travel from Pereira to Manizales, the journey surrounded by a lush green expanse of rolling green hills dotted with coffee plantations. Manizales is our base to explore the Nevada del Ruiz national park with volcano (Nevado de Ruiz) sitting proudly at 5321m above sea level. It is from Manizales that we travel on to the capital of the Antioquia province, Medellin.
Once the home of the infamous Pablo Escobar, modern Medellin is beautifully set in the middle of the Aburra valley. Medellin is the capital of Tango in Colombia and is famed for its nightlife, you can judge for yourself if its people are the most beautiful in Colombia, something Medellin’s inhabitants proudly boast. The world famous painter and sculpture Fernando Botero was born in Medellin and many of his works can be seen around the cities parks and plazas as well as in the museum of Antioquia.
