The UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast is oozing with history and is a major destination for tourists within Latin America.

The city was founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia who fought and defeated the local Indians in the area and then claimed the land for himself.Tours in colombia Cartagena became the first major Spanish settlement on mainland South America shortly afterwards. This is a shorter tour lasting 12 days with the focus on the Andean highlands and the stunning coffee growing region. You will travel from the cosmopolitan capital Bogota, with its many world class museums including the gold museum and the Botero Gallery, both set in the historic ‘La Canderlaria’ region of the city.

Santa Marta is one of the oldest cities in the Americas after it’s founding in 1525 and is home to the oldest house in the Americas, the Customs House which dates back to 1530.

Today street parades including Antique cars, Mass horse rides, the Flower Carrying Parade and a beauty pageant take place around the city and the festival is the most important social event of the year.

On top of this the small town of Guatape is an inland paradise consisting of a flooded mountainous area after a reservoir was built for a hydroelectric dam. This created a beautiful landscape full of hills and lakes and now the area is a major tourist attraction from Medellin, due to the stunning scenery. A natural rock called ‘La Piedra de Peñol’ offers the most spectacular views from the top with access coming in the way of a staircase built in to one side of the rock.

Manizales

Manizales is the capital of the Caldas province in Colombia and sits at an altitude of 2150 meters. The city is also the main centre for coffee production in the country and has no less than 7 Universities making it an important city for education within Colombia.

The main attraction near to the city is the Nevado del Ruiz national park which is home to the Volcano of the same name. At 5321 meters above sea level Nevado del Ruiz (or Mount Ruiz) is an active volcano that is accessible as a day trip from Manizales.

The town is considered one of the finest colonial towns in Colombia and was declared a National Monument on December 17, 1954 in order to preserve its architecture. At an altitude of 2,144 meters, Villa de Leyva has a nice spring like climate that its 4500 inhabitants enjoy year round.
Cobble stone streets and white washed colonial buildings are a main feature of the town but the main square (or ‘Plaza Mayor’ in Spanish) is the masterpiece. The square is one of the largest in the Americas, some 14,000 square meters, all of which is covered in large cobblestones and on all four sides by stunning colonial architecture.
The Cathedral on the main square and the Iglesia del Carmen are two fantastic examples of religious architecture. Museums also feature in the town with the Casa-Museo Luis Alberto Acuña (a local artist’s museum), Casa de Antionio Ricuarte (house of the local hero who fought in Simon Bolivar’s army) and the Religious art museum being the pick of the bunch.
